How to Reach Maharana Pratap Sagar Pong Dam in Kangra Himachal
Maharana Pratap Sagar Pong Lake or Pong Dam is named after Maharana Pratap, the great Rajput King of the 16th Century. The Pong Lake is situated in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level. Distance of Pong Lake is about 170 km from Chandigarh and about 110 km from Amritsar. Pong Lake is around 55 km from the famous hill station and District HQ Dharamshala.
Pong Lake has Rail connectivity and the nearest railway stations from Pong Lake are at Mukerian 30 km, and Pathankot at 32 km.
Small but beautiful towns Nagrota Surian and Jawali which are located on the sagar's periphery are connected by the charming narrow gauge Kangra railway line that connects Pathankot to Jogindernagar.
Gaggal Airport about 40 km is the nearest airport. Maharana Pratap Sagar Lake is well connected by buses from kangra, Pathankot, Dharamshala and other parts of the state.
The Pong dam built on the River beas was completed in 1976. The reservoir of Pong Lake covers an area of about 45000 hectares at maximum possible flooding.The level varies every season and averages around 30000 hectares. Over 200 villages with a population of over 85000 people lie along the wetland.
The bird watchers and lovers have another reason to visit here. This lake sanctuary is a big attraction for migratory ducks from Siberian region during winter. One can see thousands of ducks in the swamp area between Shahnahar barrage and Pongdam and the surrounding shallow waters of the lake.
