Soon after independence in the year 1947 the trucks and buses owned by operators like n.d. Radhakrishnan, allied chirag din & sons and nanda bus service got held up on the other side of the border with the result transport services and movement of essential commodities collapsed abruptly as the private transporters were reluctant to come forward for transportation of food grains and shifting of refugees which created crises like situation. 

In order to defuse the crisis as an alternative the government established government transport undertaking (gtu) on 5th of January, 1948 with a fleet of 50 trucks which were purchased from m/s general motor corporation Bombay.

With the growing demand for intervention of the government in the passenger transport, fleet of buses was also introduced in the fleet government transport undertaking (gtu). 

The government transport undertaking (gtu) established on 5th of January 1948 was subsequently converted into corporation (under section 3) of “the road transport corporation act -1950” on first of September 1976.

 

·         1. In case of any shortcoming observed in SRTC services or complaints, the contact persons for the service availed, as per area of operation shall be the Unit Officer. Address and Phones of same are summarized in "JKSRTC Contact Sheet" in following pages.

 

·         2. In-case the Unit Officer concerned is unable to redress or satisfy the complainant, the grievance can be projected for redressal to Profit Centre Head of the Division concerned, the address and phone of same have been summarized in . "JKSRTC Contact Sheet" in following pages.

 

·         3. The grievance of SRTC service user for any shortcoming shall also be addressed by :-
